the desk. breaking news we first told you about at 4:30. police in vallejo arresting a 14-year-old boy for a brutal attack on a 65-year-old woman. claudine wong is in vallejo with all the details of a kidnapping and attack and demand for ransom. >> reporter: let me show you where we are. we are at hidden broke parkway and interstate 80. there is not much here. there is a parking lot and an entrance to a subdivision. but we have come here because this is where the 65-year-old victim was found. she was duct taped. she was unconscious. but there is traffic through here and apparently some passer byes saw her and called for help. when police talked to her they learned she was a victim of an agree january and sexual assault in a kidnapping that started last night. she was found here after police say she was abducted by gunpoint in front of a store in a retail shopping center that is just a few miles away from

where we are this morning. police say she was forced to drive to the location and then she was left unconscious in a ditch and the suspect fled in her mini van. police talked to her and during this time a family member of the victim got a call asking for a ransom in exchange for the victim's return. now the vallejo police department started investigating and quickly found the suspect who had come back to that shopping center and he was taken into custody without incident. this suspect is just 14 years old. when she was found he was in possession of the victim's property. a replica handgun, and her mini van. he is at this hour at solano county juvenile hall. he is facing multiple charges including assault, attempted murder, carjacking, and kidnapping for ransom. we are continuing to follow this story we will head over to where this all started. live here in vallejo claudine wong.

thousands of jobs including bay area jobs may now be lost. just a short time ago this morning the company that makes hostess twinkies and other pastries announced it's going out of business. ktvu janine de la vega is in los gatos with more on the impact of this huge announcement. >> reporter: pam i just ran inside this safeway and i only found one package of twinkies on the shelf. the shelves were not stocked with a lot of hostess product. host test has announced that it will be shutting down. let's go to video that we took yesterday. thousands of its workers at its bakery including this one in oakland has been on strike protesting. they say their wages have been cut and their pensions frozen while executives pay has increased. the hostess ceo says if the workers didn't return to work by 5:00 p.m. yesterday, the company would shut down operations. today the company will go to

bankruptcy court to ask for permission to liquidate its assets. that means 18,000 people will lose their jobs and it will be the end of hostess and its iconic products. bakery operations have been suspended at all the plants and if the u.s. bankruptcy court grants this motion, then hostess could close all of its operations as early as november 20th. that is just two days before thanksgiving. now back out here live i was also able to find -- [ inaudible ] i spoke to a worker inside who said the delivery truck hasn't been here within a week. report live janine de la vega. time is 5:04. oakland police made a big arrest and giving the credit to luck and a police officer with a keen eye. last night police arrested noted gang leader ronny in san francisco at the ruth chris

steak house. an off duty police officer whole celebrating his wife's birthday spotted him as they walk into the restaurant. police were alerted. they converged on the restaurant and arrested him without incident as he was leaving the incident. >> we have put forth a lot of efforts with the department of justice, las vegas police department and oakland police department tracking him in several places. >> he faces home robberies, weapons violations and shootings. they believe his wife was shot eight times as she was picking up her child at a day care center. an hour before that arrest last night, oakland police rated his home in las vegas hoping to catch him there. happening right now former cia director divide petraeus is testifying on capitol hill about the attack on the osteogens lat in libya. this is a live picture just outside the hearing room. the public not allowed inside. petraeus is inside testifying.

now his testimony comes just one week after petraeus resigned because of an extramarital affair. coming up at 5:15 the questions petraeus will not be asked in today's hearing. intense fighting continues this morning between israel and gaza despite hopes of a cease fire. there is new video. here we are of egypt's prime minister visiting the injured in the hospital. a planned cease fire during his visit to gaza did not last. they unleashed fresh attacking including one targeting tel aviv. they hit 150 targets overnight. rocket fire continues to crisscross the skies. israel is moving its troops near the border and organizing 16 thursday reservists. more protests are planned in san francisco outside the israeli consulate on montgomery street. during a rush hour protests yesterday they called for an end to the fighting in gaza and

u.s. support of israel. >> jewish community stands behind israel right now. no one wants war but every citizen has a right to be defended by its country. >> people who are coming have to speak for themselves of course. but i think they are defending what is in essence an militarized regime. >> san francisco police had almost 20 officers on the street just in case. no arrests were made. today's protest is planned for 4:00. time is 5:07. new details about a search for a burglar who terrorized two college women during a home invasion in san rafael. here's a police sketch the police have released. investigators say the armed intruder broke into an apartment tuesday night about 10:30. he struggled with two students from dominican university. he managed to run away before the police got there, but the women say that man was stabbed.

police plan to go back to the neighborhood today. they will be passing out fliers with this new police sketch. 5:07 is the time. let's check in with sal for a look at traffic. it will get worse i guess later on today. >> yeah. one of the things we are warning people of even if it's starting off clear right now, it's not going to stay that way according to steve. steve and i are on weather patrol. even though it's not raining in many area. let's go out to the east shore freeway. i want to show you traffic is moving along well. you can see flashing lights eastbound we are check on something eastbound in this area of gilman. we'll let you know if anything is there. fete on the road -- get on the road as early as you can. today will be one of those days on the roads. unfortunately we always have a spike in crashes whenever it rains. especially after it hasn't vained in awhile -- hasn't

rained in awhile. and if you're driving in the castro valley area the traffic looks good. this is northbound 280 getting up to highway 17. that traffic is moving well. let's go to steve. our system is moving in. that will be a couple bans here. morning commute, evening commute has to deal with rain. one ban right there. here comes the next one. associated low will really get to juice things up. cloud and rain and forecast shows it by 7:00 and 8:00 there will be rain moving in. kind of hit and miss as we go into the noon hour. watch how things really juice up here. 5:00 and 6:00 looks pretty wet. this will take us into friday night early saturday then we get a break. next system up there coming in. i think about 10:00 to 4:00 will be okay and then the next system will work its way in. by the evening hours it rains in the north bay. rest of sunday will be okay. i know it just won't be very warm. a lot of cloud cover in advance

>> she is our little savior right here. she definitely woke us up at the right appropriate time. >> firefighters say the home is a total loss. investigators think it was caused by faulty electrical wiring in the wall. time now 5:13. david petraeus is on capitol hill. he is testifying before congress this morning. this is his first public appearance since resigning as head of the cia last week. ktvu alison burns reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom. he will be defending himself and the cia. alison. >> reporter: dave, house and senate intelligence committees are holding closed door hearings this morning. this is a live look outside of the one of the hearing rooms. general petraeus managed to avoid the cameras when he arrived and even though there are a lot of conspiracy theories about the hearing. the hearing is expected to focus solely on the september 11th u.s. consulate attack in

libya. yesterday the committee saw a video captured by surveillance and aerial cameras the night of the attack. lawmakers say the video shows two strikes on the complex that happened hours apart. the first attack seemed more spontaneous. >> didn't seem to get any command or control. a lot of people running around. not knowing where they were going to go. but the second attack is where the facts show that seem to be a lot more sophisticated. >> reporter: when general petraeus spoke to congress for the first time after the attacks on september 13th, he said he believed it was the result of a spontaneous protest. this morning he's expected to testify that he believed it was a result of a terrorist attack and there was some conflicting intelligence information. we're going to continue to follow what comes out of the hearings this morning and have that for you throughout the morning here on ktvu. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns ktvu channel

2 news. time is 5:15. meantime top military leaders have explaning to do this morning. there is a new report accusing the pentagon of wasting billions of dollars on unnecessary research. on things like beef jerky and ancient bird. a scary story for safeway shoppers after a man robbed a bank inside the store. concord police have released surveillance pictures of a man. the images show a white man with goatee wearing dark sunglasses and a hoody. he robbed a u.s. bank inside the safeway on willow pass road in concord just after 1:00 tuesday afternoon. although the suspect did not show a weapon he did hand the teller a node and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash. we are now hearing from a friend of software founder who is still in hiding in belize.

he is refusing to turn himself in for murder. he fears he will be killed if taken into police custody. authorities call mcafee a person of interest in the killing. >> it's stressing me out because i'm like 100% sure he didn't do it. he was here. and well, i'm sad because he's not around. >> belize prime minister described mcafee's actions as paranoia. and he has a sense he would be treated differently. he is urging mcafee to cooperate with police. more bart trains are needed because so many more people are riding bart. the san francisco examiner reports bart expects a half million passengers a day in the

coming year. bart will need about 880 train cars to carry all of those people. bart recently purchased 775 new train cars replacing the old ones. the prediction is in a decade or two bart may need about 1,000 trains to carry about 750,000 riders a day. 5:17 is the time. let's check in with sal starting in the east bay. any problems? >> not a problem. any in the major problems. but we do have a lack at the freeways that are getting busy. interstate 880 i just got a tweet from richard meyer. gave me a great reminder to tell people when it's raining, the headlights need to be on. wipers on, headlights on. that is not just a suggestion, it's state law and you could be pulled over even during the day if your headlights are not on. as a law passed a year or two ago. you shoulded a heed to that law. makes other drivers be able to see you better.

let's move along and take a look at westbound bay bridge. the traffic here is as you come up to the toll plaza is off to a good start. still dry here. nearby west 80 there was a minor crash on the shoulder. if you are driving through the castro valley area, it's a nice looking drive. no problems in livermore yet either coming from the altamont pass. let's go to steve. sal, thank you. a very happy friday. it will be a cloudy, rainy. friday evening the rain will really pick up. one ban here. the low will come in. clouds started to roll in yesterday as you know. wasn't a bad day but it got cloudy and rain begins here this morning. maybe a tenth of an inch to half inch of rain. a little bit more on the second one. which would be a colder one. that first one -- napa sleeping in. everyone is in the 40s and 50s. warm system. a higher snow level. you can see that right off san mateo-santa cruz coast.

embedded in that is pretty good returns. when you see yellow that is moderate to heavy. cloud and rain forecast. there is plenty going on here. watch morning compute and evening commute especially will be on the wet side. this is a broad brush. and then we'll continue that. might get a little bit of a break until the low comes in. by 5:00, 6:00 things are really starting to pick up. it will continue overnight friday. could be bursts of moderate to heavy rain. look at this saturday morning in napa county. sonoma county could be moderate to heavy rain. then we will get a little break and the second one comes in. cloudy rain. off and on rain. it will take us into a cooler pal tern today. not too bad. it will be in the 60s. just by mere fact this is a warmer system. it looks like we have rain today. saturday night sunday morning rain comes in. and then we see a little break. cooler breezy.

okay monday. clouds increase tuesday. thanks, steve. the major european markets open with losses this morning as investors continue to worry about u.s. fiscal policy. overnight japan nikkei finished up about 2%. investors there are encouraged about the possibility of further economic easing by the tokyo government. checking in on our numbers futures right now point to a slightly mixed opening. maybe a little bit higher for the dow but a drop in the nasdaq and the s & p 500. you can see following a little bit of losses some losses yesterday. it will start slowing up as question get closer to thanksgiving. san francisco based gap reports third quarter earnings. boosted profits 60% from last year. the announcement comes as gap increases its marketing and revamps its product line. 5:21. a vacaville community remembering a teenage death

time is 5:24. police in vacaville still searching for answers in a 30- year-old murder case. last night family members and friends held this candle light vigil in honor of deanna lynn johnson. she was only 14 years old when she was killed. while the suspect hasn't been arrested yet in her murder, friends say they know who did it. >> de anna's mother suffers every day. we as a community don't understand why the police have never stepped up. >> police say they don't have enough evidence to make an arrest in the case. friends meantime are asking anyone who may have been at that party 30 years ago to call police with information. a republican senator accuses a pentagon of wasting billions of dollars in san francisco money. released a list of questionable defense department projects. they include $1.5 million to

time now 5:30. rain really not moving in quite yet? >> it's right there. it's right there. it will be here soon. it's knocking on the door. in fact some areas have a little bit of light rain. let's get right to it. there will be two bands. one right offshore and the low has to come in later on. right there on the senator mccain s and santa -- san mateo and santa cruz coastline. here is sal. this is highway 4. traffic is a little busy. i just called gaits in the utility here. i want the guys in the control room to take the emery vail camera if they will. there is a big camera on 80 westbound. there is a jackknifed truck or some sort of stalled truck here on west 80 at powell street. you can see traffic is coming to a standstill. chp just crossed with a sig alert on this. this is live television so he's kind of panning the camera and

the safeway when i told them about what was happening and hostess he was surprised. he said he was sad to see the hostess product go. personally i've always been partial to hohos so it will be interesting to see if there will be a rush on products like these. people are worried they will never see them again. reporting live janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. time now is 5:33. more on the breaking news. police arrested a 14-year-old boy in a case involving a kidnapping and ransom. he's accused of kidnapping a 65- year-old woman at gunpoint in front of a store on plaza drive. he forced her to drive to a nearby location then sexually assaulted her. the victim was found duct taped and dumped in a ditch at hidden brook parkway and highway 80. people driving by say they saw the victim and they called the police. in the meantime, the suspect

reportedly called the victim's family and demanded money for her return. investigators say they eventually tracked down the teenager and they have booked him into the solano county juvenile hall on charges that include attempted murder, carjacking, and kidnapping for ransom. ktvu claudine wong has been on the story since 4:30. she will be back with more in about 30 minutes. the rain son the way. that is causing concern in daly city this morning. neighbors are worried that another mud slide will swamp their streets. ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty is out there in daly city with what crews are doing to keep this hillside from collapsing for the second time this week. >> reporter: it took the city 36 hours to dig a channel to keep the impending rain out of this area. we haven't noticed too many folks out and about this morning. ever since the water main broke tuesday, we have noticed neighbors walking around really watching that hillside closely.

now the big priority right now is to make sure that the rain does not make the mud slide worse. originally the city said 45,000 gallons of water gushed from that ruptured pipe. now they it's more like 90,000. they have set up bails of hay. they have laid netting. and the disaster left dozens of cars trapped in the mud and buried in the street. as city officials cleared the storm drains to prepare for this weekend. >> we'll have crews assigned to make sure this structure we constructed is functioning the way it was designed to. >> reporter: today the street is clear but hillside park is still buried in four feet of mud. the goal is to keep from more mud slipping and to rebuild. live from daly city i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. overnight news san francisco police say a suspect is in the hospital now with life threatening injuries

following a confrontation with police officers. police say they tried to stop the man near 37th avenue in fulton street about 11:25 last night. police say he ran away but they caught him. now they say he resisted arrest and he had a medical program of some kind. paramedics were called in to give him cpr. we are told he is in critical condition. we'll bring you more information as it becomes available. a mother from antioch is pleading with thieves to return an urn that contains the ashes of her baby. the burglars broke into her house and stole it while she was in grief counseling for the infant's death. coming up at 5:45 we'll let you hear the desperate plea she is making. president obama meets with congressional leaders at the white house this morning to push for consensus in ways to

avoid the upcoming fiscal cliff. the vice president will also attend. president obama wants any deficit reduction plan to include tax increases on the wealthy. republican leaders say they will not accept higher tax rates. the thanksgiving holiday travel season kicks off at san francisco airport today. today is expected to be the busiest day. that is a 3% increase from last year. time now 5:37. let's go right back to sal. you showed us a problem a moment ago. what is happening on the freeway in >> that is right east shore freeway. west 80. it was a truck crash and also several cars with flat tires now. the freeway is down to a couple of lanes. here's where the backup begins. right down here you can see or right up here as we tilt up you can see how bad the traffic is upstream as everyone is kind of

winding down to those lanes. once you actually get to the accident there is you know it does get better. but you will be in a lot of slow traffic coming in on 80 westbound. coming in from at least richmond now. this is a big problem for the east shore freeway. we've had a bunch of carcel pulled over -- cars pulled over with some sort of flat tire. you need to give yourself extra time. if you have a different way to go. if you can avoid this stretch of the freeway you should. let's take a look at the westbound bay bridge. that traffic is not all that heavy just yet. but you can tell people are showing up. and the morning commute in the east bay continues to be okay in the livermore valley. also in contra costa county through danville and san ramon on 680. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. a very happy friday morning. it's cloudy and about ready to rain if it isn't already. it's right there on the coast. things will get going here pretty quick. not bad yesterday. clouds increase late in the

day. it was kind of on the mild side. rain begins three tenths of an inch. it's a warmer system. this one will take us into saturday morning. we have two bans. first ban and then the low has to come over. the second one is out of the knot. that is a colder system. it will be late saturday into early sunday. 40s and 50s. i think the temps will be going up here. 56 oakland and san francisco. right off the san mateo santa cruz coastline right there. embedded in that could be bursts of moderate rain. things are getting very, very close. if you don't have the rain yet it's not far away. cloud, rain forecast keeps things on the active side. there might be a little bit of a break for some. maybe south bay, peninsula, around the noon hour. watch what happens around 4:00 to 5:00 here comes the low. that will trigger in pretty good rain. we'll take that into early saturday morning. look at that. cloudy rain. today off and on rain.

year-old mason of san diego who died after drinking too much at an off campus party. the college says he had been pledging to join a fraternity and his death could be related to hazing. the college says it will establish a new set of guidelines that greek organizations have to follow to be reinstated. >> we already have a lot of guidelines. i'm sure they will be even stricter. >> students will be allowed to live in their houses for the rest of the semester but all greek activities have been suspended until further notice. according to the chronicle san francisco city attorney wants to crack down on reported land use violations by the academy of art university. the chronicle says it has copy of the letter to the city's planning director. reportedly he wants the planning department to issue violation notices to the school that could lead to fines of $250 a day. the school is accused of buying

properties and converting them. the owner of the academy of art university says the school did not intentionally violate any laws. walmart workers say they will disrupt holiday shopping an black friday. these employees say they will stage a thousand separate protests at walmart stores nation-wide one week from today. they are angry about working conditions and they say they want to join a union. but they say walmart will retaliate against workers who try to organize. so they are planning strikes as well as flash mobs. walmart is dismissing all of this as a publicity stunt. >> we'll stay on that story for sure. sal is checking in on the east shore. how does it look today? >> it will be slow because of that stall we had today. we had a truck that got into a crash. we are showing you the backup here and how extremely heavy it is on the 80 westbound because of this pressure. if you are driving anywhere

from richmond into the powell street area give yourself extra time. police are working hard to get the lanes clear. you can see and as we look down it's still temperature there is one truck there involved that is stuck there in one of the middle lanes. and then there is a little bit down the road there is another lane blocking. let's move along and take a look at the westbound bay bridge that is beginning to fill up a little bit about a ten minute delay on the toll plaza. there is also a crash reported now on 80 westbound just past treasure island on the onramp there. sounds like a pretty serious crash. and the metering lights have gone on early. this morning contra costa county the traffic there looks good. we mentioned 80 so we are looking at the upper portion of 80 as well. so far that big backup has not reached pinole. our system moving in right there. our rain looks like it's right on about san francisco, san mateo coast. starting to fill in santa cruz

coastline then the low will come in. we will have a little rain. heavier rain comes in as the low inches closer. radar points it out from about marin county almost. southern marin county. starting to fill in on that san mateo coast. the peninsula. close up look shows move into the city. south san francisco also down to half-moon bay. cloud and rain forecast. keeps a very active pattern here. there will be light rain and occasionally some of that rain will be heavier. looks like that morning commute if you have already beat the rain. you might encounter some if you head west. you is see by this evening look at that. there that will really pick up the rain rates. in fact up toward napa county there is forecast models there could be bursts of moderate rain. cloudy rain. off and on rain today. a couple breaks here and there. steady rain. 60s on the temps. that is really not the big issue today. it's the rain and how much about a tenth to a three quarters of an inch.

we'll see rain into early saturday. and then sunday morning that is when the colder system drops in. we do get a break monday maybe early tuesday. >> thank you. a federal judge in san francisco is considering a settlement in a privacy case against facebook. facebook was sued by five members because it sponsored stories advertising feature. the lawsuit claims that violates california law by publicizing users likes without compensation. the judge rejected an earlier settlement offer because it did not award any money to facebook users. a u.s. judge is allowing apple and samsung to add to their list of products. the judge said samsung could add the iphone five to the pucks it claims infringes on its products. apple will be allowed to add samsung galaxy. apple won an earlier pattern infringement offer. 5:52. we knew it would be big, but how big will it be?

just had a nice tweet from martin. wet roads in novato so it's on its way. another system late saturday early sunday. time now 5:55. 49ers head coach jim harbaugh expected to be back at work today. the 48-year-old coach went to stanford hospital for what is called a minor procedure for an irregular heartbeat. the 49ers insist it's not a big concern but harbaugh was having chest pains on wednesday. we are surprised some of the players they say he looked fine. was slapping hands and stuff like that. they are confident he is okay another will be leading the team against the bears monday night. it's been almost 24 years now since michaela garrett went missing. while her family is a step closer to closure there is still questions. they are still waiting on test results about a bone found in lyndon well where victims of the speed freak killers are said to be buried. monday will mark the anniversary of her kidnapping.
